when encountering a book snob
When encountering a book snob whose entire conversation consists of quotes, I ask them calmly to discuss their own original ideas, insights and practical wisdom which they did not read in a book. When they mention a book again, I gently steer them back to the point that I would like to hear about their own original observations, literally anything interesting, that they thought of themselves without having memorised it. But I only do this if I feel fine that this person will avoid me forever after.
